Developmental and Structural Editing

Reviewing and providing a written report on the book’s structure and content –including reorganizing structure, new content suggestions, verifying plot arc and character development.

Developmental editing is looking at the manuscript as a whole and focusing on improving your story’s structure, pacing, perspective, narrative style, organization, and loose ends. In this in-depth process, suggestions for material to be added, removed, or reorganized will be addressed.

Notes on the editing cycle

There are many different terms that explain the editing process, and so many of them have become synonymous over the years. I like to explain it like this:

Developmental Editing is a look at the big picture. Does the story make sense? Do the characters make sense? Are the characters’ motivations well developed?

When the author is happy with their overall work, we move on to the next step.

Copy Editing and Line Editing is where the nitty gritty work takes place. We work on sentence structure, awkward phrasing, and improving clarity. We also narrow in on details like making sure a character’s eye color is the same throughout.

When the author is happy with this almost complete project…

We come to the last step, which is Proofreading – going through the entire manuscript with a fine tooth comb to get rid of all the little spelling, punctuation and grammatical mistakes.

How Long Does Book Editing Take?

At Owl Focus Editing, most projects depend on editor availability and manuscript length.

The time is takes to edit a book will depend on several factors:

  • The length of the book.
  • The type of book editing.
  • The workload of the editor.

The average size for a novel is 80,000-110,000 words. Anything over 110,000 words would require more time to edit.

In addition, the complexity of your book is a factor. It will take less time to edit a ‘standard’ contemporary novel with only text and no fact-checking.

The type of editing is also important. Developmental and copy editing take the longest amount of time, often requiring two read-throughs in order to focus on one particular aspect at a time. Proofreading is the final read-through and ‘cleaning up’ of the manuscript and takes the least amount of time.

Good book editors are always busy, so there’s a good chance your book will be added to a queue of other titles. For example, a typical 80,000 word novel will take about 5-6 weeks for a developmental edit.
